Frequently Asked Questions

What is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is an effective method of health care that has evolved into a complete holistic medical system. Practitioners of acupuncture and Chinese medicine have used this medical system to diagnose, and help millions of people get better, recover and stay healthy.

It is a safe, painless, and effective way to treat a wide variety of medical problems.

What will my acupuncturist do?

During the initial examination, a complete health history will be taken. Your acupuncturist will ask questions about some symptoms, your health and lifestyle. Your pulse and tongue may also be checked. This information is organized to create a complete, accurate and comprehensive diagnosis of where the Qi has been blocked or unbalanced. After the interview process, you will be able to receive acupuncture treatment. Visits with the acupuncturist can last from thirty to ninety minutes.

How should I prepare?
  • Write down and bring any questions you have.

  • Bring loose, comfortable clothing to the appointment to facilitate access to the acupuncture points.

  • Do not eat too much before or after the appointment.

  • Avoid overexertion, exercise and alcohol for up to six hours after the appointment.

  • Avoid stressful situations. Take time to relax, and make sure you get enough rest.

  • Between visits, take note of any changes that have occurred, such as pain relief, shifting of pain to other areas, or changes in the frequency and type of symptoms.

What to expect?

The needles are about the size of a cat’s whisker. The sensation caused by an acupuncture needle varies. You may experience a vague numbness, heaviness, tingling or dull ache where the acupuncture needle has been inserted. Sometimes people experience some pain while the needles are inserted, or a sensation of energy spreading and moving around the needle. This is called the “Qi sensation”. All of these reactions are good and a sign that the treatment is working.

Is acupuncture safe?

Acupuncture is extremely safe. It is an all-natural, drug-free therapy that produces no negative side effects, only a sense of relaxation and well-being. There is little danger of infection from acupuncture needles because they are sterile, used only once and then discarded.

Why will the acupuncturist take my pulse?

There are twelve pulse positions on each wrist that your acupuncturist will palpate. Each position corresponds to a specific meridian and organ. Your acupuncturist will look for twenty-seven individual qualities that reflect overall health. If there is a problem, it may show up on the pulse.

How much does it cost?

Fees vary and depend on the procedures performed. It is best to consult with your acupuncturist about costs.

How many treatments will I need?

The frequency and number of treatments needed depend on a number of factors: your constitution, the severity and duration of the problem, and the quality and quantity of your Qi. Some people experience immediate relief; others may take months or even years to achieve results. Chronic conditions usually take longer to resolve than acute conditions. We suggest a minimum of one month to see significant changes. Additionally, your acupuncturist may suggest one or two treatments per week, or monthly visits for health maintenance.

Will my insurance cover acupuncture?

Insurance coverage varies from state to state. We suggest you contact your insurance company to find out what type of care is covered.

What is facial acupuncture for?

Acupuncture, used as a natural facial treatment, is a rejuvenating and revitalizing process designed to help the entire body feel younger, in addition to a smoother, more radiant complexion.
